TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme

In collaboration with UNESCO and a number of centres of excellence in the South, TWAS has instituted a Joint Associateship Scheme to enable competent researchers from the South to visit these centres regularly. An associate is appointed for three years during which he/she can visit a Centre twice for research collaboration. Almost 300 centres have been selected to participate in the Scheme.

TWAS Research Professors in LDCs

A number of TWAS Fellows and TWAS Young Affiliates/Alumni will be offered appointments as TWAS Research Professors for one year, during which he/she will visit the host institution in a LDC for a period of two to four weeks. TWAS provides travel support while living expenses are covered by the host centre. NB: Only TWAS Fellows and TWAS Young Affiliates/Alumni are eligible for appointment. Requests need to be submitted by research groups/scientific institutions in LDCs.

TWAS-TÜBİTAK Postgraduate Fellowship Programme

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) and TWAS have established a fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing countries in the South who wish to pursue research toward a PhD in a field of the natural and related applied sciences, in departments and laboratories of public and private universities of Türkiye and TÜBİTAK Research Centers and Institutes.

Minimum degree held: MSc

Duration: For a minimum period of 6 months to a maximum period of 12 months.

Call for submission: 2024 Human Rights Essay Award

The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual award sponsored by the Academy aimed at encouraging the production of academic articles in the field of international human rights law. The topic for the 2024 award is "Protection and Guarantee of Human Rights in Digital Environments." Participants have the flexibility to choose any subject related to this theme. However, the scope of the essay must directly correspond to the 2024 theme, or it will be disqualified. Additionally, we would like to note that we believe international human rights law includes international humanitarian law and international criminal law.

PARTICIPANTS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must hold a law degree, Juris Doctor, (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), or equivalent.
  • Shall have a demonstrated experience or interest in international human rights law.
  • Have the flexibility to choose any subject related to the 2024 topic: ¨Protection and Assurance of Human Rights in Digital Environments¨
  • Must keep in mind the essay must be a legal article citation sources.

Deadline for submissions: February 1, 2024.

African Peacebuilding Network: Individual Research Fellowships

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invites research fellowship applications from African scholars, researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners working on conflict and peacebuilding issues at universities and research institutions; or regional, governmental, and nongovernmental agencies or organizations based in Africa.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at USIU-Africa for the September (Fall) 2024 Intake

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at USIU-Africa will provide full-cost scholarships to young Africans who are first-time undergraduate degree-seeking applicants. By completion of their studies, scholars will be required to lead changes in their communities and contribute to meaningful transformation across the continent, having been equipped with internationally recognized and locally applicable qualifications.

Tarbell Fellowship for early-career journalists

The Tarbell Fellowship is a one-year programme for early-career journalists interested in covering emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence.

Fellows secure a 9-month placement at a major newsroom, participate in a study group covering AI governance & technical fundamentals, and attend a 2 week journalism summit in Oxford. The Tarbell Fellowship provides a stipend of up to $50,000 to support these placements.

The programme incorporates expert speakers, feedback & mentorship from experienced journalists and networking events with experts from leading AI organisations. Upon graduation, we expect fellows to bring their impact-focused perspective to major newsrooms and publications around the globe.

The 2024 Tarbell Fellowship will run from January - December 2024. Applications for the 2024 cohort will close on November 5th 2023.
